All over!

Well the Relay is over and we all had a great time (despite the weather!) and raised a lot of money for the Cancer Society - latest figures were around $245K.

Unfortunately the rain didn’t let up over the weekend and so on Saturday afternoon the organisers made the tough decision to stop the Relay at Midnight (12 hour relay instead of the full 24).  This didn’t stop everyone enjoying themselves and getting into the spirit of the event.

The majority of the walking was done around the Caledonian track instead of on Logan Park where the tent city was set up.  This was a smart choice as Logan Park very quickly turned into a bog in places.  We all gathered for the start of the event to watch the “survivors lap”.

After this first lap we, and all the other teams, joined in to begin our relay.  We walked as a team for a couple of laps and then took turns at keeping the baton moving for the 12 hours.

About 8.30pm the Relay was moved from the Caledonian track back onto Logan Park because of a lack of lighting on the track.  It was quite nice to be on Logan Park walking among all the tents, even thought they had shortened the track and managed to bypass our team’s tent.

About 9/9.30pm the candlelight ceremony took place.  This was a short and moving ceremony paying tribute to friends and family who have battled, or are continuing to battle cancer.  Normally during this ceremony the track would be illuminated by candle tributes to loved ones placed around the outside of the track.  Unfortunately due to the weather this wasn’t possible, but ours continued to flicker (by battery power not flame) quietly in the tent.

There was plenty of entertainment during the day and night to keep the spirits high and the momentum going.

A big thanks has to go to Carl for bringing down hot water and large selection of teas to warm us up as the evening cooled down.

Midnight soon approached and the end of the Relay was upon us.  We had a fantastic day and would like to thank all the people that supported us in this event.  with your support iTeam has raised nearly $1000 with more still being collected.  THANKS!

The idea of the relay is for teams to complete a relay-style walk or run where team members take turns to keep their baton moving for 24 hours.

There is a great atmosphere at the relay created through entertainment, camping, spot prizes and most importantly the vibrancy of the hundreds of lively people on the track!

Please come along and join us for the whole weekend, or just for a short time.  I’d highly recommend coming for the opening ceremony at noon on Sat 21st.

To join us during the weekend, sign up for a timeslot here http://doodle.com/qrk4xnr2heqi5wn5, or talk to one of the team.
